    KESTREL-BAIT is walking a convoy across the Ashlands next week and I want every Screamer tip on the board in one place. Ours: stakes and rags every ten paces so the wind does your walking for you. Listen for the kettle. When you hear it, go sideways. Never, ever run in a straight line.

    The kettle is the flywheel clutch engaging. Had a dead one on the bench: it's about a second and a half of rising whine before the shriek, starting low and climbing fast. Which means if you've got a hat with earflaps, take it off on the ash. Your ears need to work more than they need to be warm.

    Tin cans on string between the stakes, two or three stones in each. The wind rattles them in a nice random rhythm. We did 200 m of can-line last spring and next morning there were eleven of them sat on the surface with their blades full of tins, fouled solid. Also bedsprings. I will trade anything for bedsprings.
