HE CAME HOME. Tobs, taken in the '58 harvest, knocked tonight

9 MESSAGES. OPENED BY MARROW 2061-10-14 23:50

I don't know how to write this. My son. Taken off our street in the Sector 11 harvest of '58, six years old, and I have looked for him every day since. Tonight there was a knock at the SILENCE hatch and it was him. Duffel coat far too big, Sparky the bear under his arm, crying, and he said 'Dad, can I come in?' and he called me what he always called me. I don't know how he got out. I don't care. He's asleep on my lap as I type. Every loop has an end. This is mine.

Oh, lad. Oh, Marrow. I'm made up for you, I really am. Give him a biscuit from me and tell him his dad's the best shot in twelve sectors.

Coat, boots, blankets, whatever he needs, it's on the Larder and I don't want to see a single tin for it. What size is he?

  4. 2061-10-15 08:02

Same as he was. He was always small for his age. Six-year-old boots please, Doyle. He keeps asking for his mum. I haven't told him yet.

Marrow, I rejoice with you, and I will say this as your friend, because I would want it said to me. Has the drill been done? It is only the drill. It is for everyone. It was for me when I came in, and it will be for the Archbishop of Canterbury if he ever turns up at a hatch.

  6. 2061-10-15 13:15

Marrow. '58 was three years ago. I'm not saying anything. I'm asking you to count on your fingers, and then ask him something only Tobs would know. Something that was never on a form. You know better than any of us what goes on a form.

They starve them in the camps, Wren, that's why he hasn't grown. He knows the bear's name. He knows my name for him. I know what you're all saying and I'd be saying it too. Give me tonight. Just give me tonight with him.

He doesn't kick. Tobs kicked every night of his life, he used to kick me clean out of bed. He's lying on my arm with his eyes shut and he's so still. I asked him what lived under his bed. He said a monster. It was a badger. Mr Gray. We made him up together. And the bear's name was on his intake form, box 31, personal effects. I typed four years of those forms. I know exactly what they keep. I've sent for Hanna. I haven't let go of him. I don't know how to let go of him.

Drill done at SILENCE, 05:10, three adults present, Marrow holding its hand throughout because he asked to. Neck 96. Wrist nothing. Warm water, no change. The blade was in the right forearm and it did not use it, and I will not guess why on an open board. Marrow is with the Chapter now and he is not alone. Tobias stays on the missing list. The real one. We keep looking. Nobody replies to this thread.
