Lampreys smell cooking smoke. Everyone knows this. But we've got to eat. What's everyone using down there that doesn't smell of dinner?

Hay box. Bring the pot to the boil somewhere safe above ground, then pack it in a crate full of hay or old jumpers and carry it down. It'll keep cooking for hours with no flame and no smoke.

Hay box is right. For hot water I've made a few charcoal stoves with a long flue that vents up an old gas main a good 300 m off. Lamprey follows the smell to an empty street and chews a gas main. Serves it right.

Built a hay box out of a Bureau filing cabinet and Joss's old jumpers. Stew still hot after four hours. No grinding in my teeth all night.
