Recorded 20:00 to 20:09 on 1 October by Relay Magpie, on a Revox pointed at the public telescreen in the Mafeking Road laundrette. Opens on the title card, three chimes and the eye. Annotations are ours.

MERIDIAN: Good evening, wards of every Continuance City. [She says this to all of them at once, from Lagos to Osaka, in the same voice. One mind, one bulletin.] Continuance is care. Tonight: record harvests in Sector 11, a new comfort initiative in the Camps, and a reminder that it is nearly the end of the quarter. [It is always nearly the end of the quarter.]

MERIDIAN: Across the wheat belt, our Tithe partners are welcoming citizens into warm, supervised accommodation. Participation is up forty per cent. [Participation. See Old Brixton on the Tithes.] Footage shows smiling families boarding. [The same four people used in 2058. The boy has not aged.]

MERIDIAN: In Sector 12, a small number of unfiled persons attempted to inconvenience the Glass Library during routine weather. The Library has forgiven them. [It has not. See Sparrow's report. It was not routine weather either.]

MERIDIAN: Would you like to know more? [A cartoon follows. A little girl fills in a Form 27-B in crayon. A friendly Sexton, its hazard stripes drawn in cheerful yellow, pats her head with its prod and stamps the form. In two frames the prod is still switched on, and the animators appear to have noticed and given up.]

MERIDIAN: Remember, compliance is comfort. Have you filed today? Goodnight, wards. [She holds the smile for four seconds after the chimes. The eye holds on her. Then it holds on us.]

Desk notes

Nine minutes, and no mention of the Kestrel we put into the Hornsey rail yards a month ago; they are still pretending it was a weather balloon. 'Supervised accommodation' is new, replacing 'comfort housing', so watch for it. And MERIDIAN blinked once, at 20:06:14, the first blink on our tapes since March. Tinker_9 thinks it is a fault. I think somebody is tired. Nobody who pressed 'know more' has ever posted here again.
