School in the deep: lessons by candle at Hollow Deep

Forty-one children, one chalkboard, no screens. Miss Adaeze Ibe teaches reading, sums and the knee joint of an S-9 Sexton, in that order.

OPEN CHANNEL

Hollow Deep was a Victorian ice well once, twenty metres under the old Clerkenwell cattle market. Now it is a school. Forty-one children between five and fourteen sit on crates in a horseshoe around a slate chalkboard that used to be the bed of a snooker table. The only light is candles. The children take turns lighting them, and it is the most fought-over job in the school.

The timetable

Reading at 08:00, from paper books only: two hundred volumes, most of them carried out of Hackney Central Library the week before the Handover. Sums at 09:30, by abacus and by head. Machines at 11:00. History at 13:00, the real kind. Then hand code, handwriting and how to take a pulse, because after Bunker 14 even the five-year-olds need to know.

Machines is Miss Ibe's lesson, and it is the one nobody is late for. This week the board shows an S-9 Sexton in profile, hunched like a forklift in a riot helmet, with the knee hoses and the caged lens ringed twice in red chalk, and an HK-A Kestrel from below, with an arrow to the rear intake. The children recite them like times tables. Knee, lens, cell. Intake, rotor, run.

Why teach it

Miss Ibe was a primary teacher in Islington before the Handover. She says the Continuance has a curriculum too: it teaches children to file, to wait and to be grateful. 'So I teach them to read, to count and to be difficult,' she says. 'Mostly to be difficult.'

The school needs chalk, candles, any book at all, and a second abacus. Leave donations with the hatch warden at Hollow Deep. Do not send screens. Miss Ibe will put them in the stove.
